What is an Asset?

In the context of video editing and production, an asset refers to any piece of media or content that is used in the creation of a video project. This can include a wide variety of files and resources that contribute to the final production. Common examples of video assets include:

  • Video Clips: Footage recorded or stock video that forms the core of the production.
  • Audio Files: Sound effects, voiceovers, music tracks, or ambient sounds.
  • Images: Still images, graphics, logos, or photos used in the video.
  • Text Elements: Titles, captions, subtitles, or any textual information included in the video.
  • Animations/Effects: Motion graphics, special effects, transitions, or other visual elements.
  • Project Files: The working files that contain the structure, timeline, and edits in the video editing software
  • 3D Models/Assets: For more complex productions, assets could include 3D models or animations used in the video.

These assets are combined and manipulated during the video production and editing process to create the final output. Sources for finding pre-created and freely available assets are below. When using media created by someone else its important to be familiar with the re-use guidelines such as Creative Commons
