Finding information

The Library's database subscriptions provide access to hundreds of German-language newspapers. Each database provides a unique set of information sources, and you may need to use more than one database to get all the information you need.

Most library databases use OpenAthens for authentication. See more information about OpenAthens on the Find scholarly information page.

Find news articles

The follow databases will help you find news articles. News databases use a full text search, so your search should include the actual terms used in the articles; brainstorm synonyms and related terms for your keywords, and expect to repeat the search process with new vocabulary as you discover useful search terms. Other tips:

  • Use German keywords for German-language articles
  • Search one source (newspaper or magazine) at a time
  • Use date filters to narrow to a time period of a news story
    • For example, Syrian refugees in Germany, January-October 2015; Rhine River drought in August 2022

The first resource on this list, PressReader, offers a graphical browsing interface for newspapers and magazines, but it is not as useful for searching.
