Quick Summary

What is it?

USGS now requires that those receiving research grant funding from the USGS take steps to make research data publicly accessible. Here is a link to the full policy. Information on Scientific Data Management can be found in the USGS manual, IM OSQI 2015-01.

When?

Publications: October 2016.

Data:  October 2016.

How?

USGS publications will be have to be deposited in the USGS-only Information Product Data System repository. Manuscripts will be released to the public after embargo periods expire. USGS research data must follow guidance set out in the USGS data management site. This is an interim policy in effect until such time as a complete policy is released by USGS.

Why?

This plan was developed in response to the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy’s (OSTP) February 22, 2013 memorandum, “Increasing Access to the Results of Federally Funded Scientific Research."

So what do I really have to do?
