LibGuides Editing Guidelines

Original content created by: Nicole Hennig, Leslie Sult, and the UA LibGuides Team

Creating a new guide from scratch

Start with Create Guide on the Libguides home page.

When you create a new guide, in some cases you'll Start fresh. However, if you are creating a new subject, topic or course guide, we recommend using one of the GT Library templates. The templates are named

  • Subject guide template
  • Template course guide one
  • Template course guide two
  • Topic guide template

To use a template, under Choose Layout or Reuse, select Copy content / layout from an existing guide. Then search for a template by name. Or you can copy one of your own guides.

Copy Assets [option displays if you have chosen Copy content / layout from an existing guide]

  • DO check the box for Copy Assets. This will allow you to edit content from the guide you copied.

Name your guide - Use something simple and direct.

  • Course guides - Put the course number first and course name after it
Example: PSYC 2015 - Research Methods
  • Subject guides - Use the subject name that is used by your college or department
    Example: Aerospace Engineering
  • Topic guides - Use a specific topic name
    Example: Literature Reviews
  • General Purpose guides - Use the name of the library service
    Example: Gadgets

Name your first page

  • The default name for the first page is Introduction.
  • Feel free to change it to something more specific, such as Getting Started, Background Information, or whatever makes sense.

Description
Leave it blank (It makes the guide cluttered and too wordy).

Guide type

  • Use Subject Guide for academic subjects
  • Use Topic Guide for topics such as Title IX or citation management
  • Use Course Guide for content created for specific courses
  • Use General Purpose Guide for library services such as Gadgets
  • Do not use Internal Guide or Template Guide unless you have discussed it with LibGuides administrators

Group assignment

There is currently one group set up on the GT Library LibGuides site, called LibGuides Possibilities - this is a sandbox space to test NEW guides before they are published for users.

Share guide content

  • Choose No for internal guides.
  • Choose Internal if you want others at GT Libraries to be able to copy your guide as the basis for one they are creating.
  • Choose Community if you want to make your guide available for copying by any library that uses LibGuides.

A brief note on tags

The LibGuides style team is still discussing tags. Do not use tags right now. We will update you if that changes.
