Link types and guidance

Linking is an important aspect of a user's experience with a LibGuide. There are several link varieties we expect LibGuide creators to use. This page will cover making links for:

  • Friendly URLs to external websites and other LibGuides
  • Books from the Library catalog
  • Databases from the A-Z list

Friendly URLs

Why use a friendly URL?

  • The default URLS are long and ugly. (example:  https://libguides.library.arizona.edu/c.php?g=1070534&p=7895082 )
  • A friendly URL looks better in email, chat, Slack, newsletters, or on posters and flyers.
  • A friendly URL is easy to tell someone verbally.

Use words from your title that are easy to remember.
Use the course number for a course page.

Examples:

https://libguides.library.gatech.edu/architecture

https://libguides.library.gatech.edu/HTS2813

If the name is really long, you might want to use an abbreviation.
https://libguides.library.gatech.edu/BME

When to use a friendly URL

Use a friendly URL for links to external websites, tools, Library webpages, and other LibGuides. Any book from the Library catalog, journal link, or database needs to be handled in the methods below.

How to:

1. Add a friendly URL for the whole guide
Look in the upper right of your editing page, where it says URL. Click the pencil icon.

2. Add a friendly URL to each page
You can also create a friendly URL for each page. (Recommended!)

Example: https://libguides.library.gatech.edu/guidelines/friendly

Look just below the subjects and tags. Click the pencil icon.
